JOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Children’s Services, Grade 24
LOCATION: Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: April 1, 2026
SALARY: $46,082 per year (Includes generous benefits package)

HOURS: 40 hours per week

Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Rotating weekly evening shift 11:15 a.m.-8:15 p.m. every other week; Rotating weekend every other month.



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with extensive knowledge of Children’s Services in a public library. Must pass pre-employment testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Overseesdaily functions of the Children’s Department at Headquarters including scheduling staff, coordinating programs,outreach initiatives,special events, and summer reading.
  • Supervises, trains, mentors, and evaluates Children’s Department staff at Headquarters;establishesperformance expectations and ensures alignment withsystemwidestandards.
  • Establishes andmaintainsdepartmental service standards to ensure superior customer service for patrons of all ages, includingassistancewithreader’sadvisory, research, technology, and digital resources.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and services for children (birth–12) and their caregivers to ensure responsiveness to community needs and alignment with best practices.
  • Leadsdepartment meetingsand planning processesandparticipatesin the Children’s Services committee meetings and other committees as needed.
  • Stays informed of trends in children’s services through professional literature, conferences, training, and community engagement to support innovative and relevant programming.
  • Maintains department statistics, prepares monthly and other required reports, and monitors program outcomes.
  • RepresentsSpartanburg County Public Librariesat conferences and events related to children.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Master’s Degree in Library Sciencefrom an accredited ALA library schoolwithextensiveknowledge of Children’s Services in a public library
  • Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials and practices withpublic library experience and supervisory experience
  • Leadership and project management experience
  • Comprehensiveknowledge of children’s literature
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with technology
  • Ability toestablishdeadlines,monitorprogress, and work well with a team
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • SCPL uses multi-factor authentication for network and program access. Employees may be required to use their personal device for MFA.
  • Driver’s license valid in the State of South Carolina with the ability to drive to other libraries or community outreach
