1885 - 2010
October 17, 2010 marks the 125th Anniversary of the Library system in Spartanburg. It’s hard to imagine, but the first Library opened on October 17, 1885 thanks to a generous donation from Mrs. Helen Fayssoux Kennedy in honor of her husband, Dr. Lionel Chalmers Kennedy, a well known and respected physician who passed away five years earlier. Since that time, the library system has grown to include 10 full service Branch Libraries including the Headquarters Library downtown, a Law Library located at the county courthouse and a Bookmobile.
Each location, excluding the Law Library, provides a variety of programming for children, teens and adults and is equipped with meeting room facilities, free internet access, and shelves full of books, magazines, movies, music and more. For those who are not able to come in to a library, Homebound Services delivers books to shut-ins almost every day. Additionally many downloadable resources are available on our website.
A birthday party for the public will kick off the year of festivities commemorating our 125th anniversary. Stop by any of our branch locations to celebrate with us during the weekend of October 17. Cake will be available for the public and patrons will also be allowed to sign a commemorative photo of their branch location.
Amnesty Week, October 17-23, 2010
Anyone who has an overdue fee or an overdue item is eligible for amnesty. Bring canned goods inside to the checkout desk of your local library branch and we will clear your overdue fees regardless of the amount or how long the items are overdue.
It’s a Scavenger Hunt! Pick up your gamecards at the Headquarters Library and follow the clues around downtown Spartanburg. Participants who complete their gamecards will receive a commemorative 125th Anniversary iPod case as a reward.
