General Gardening Information

 

BackyardGardener.com has great links to dozens of websites, broken down by topic, or searchable by keyword.  They cover dozens of topics, including areas not easily found on other sites, such as Alpine gardens, Bog gardens, and fence design.

Gardenweb's virtual library is a large directory of gardening links covering general, regional, and international sites, horticultural sites, botanic gardens and museums, societies and associations, directories of nurseries and catalogs, lists of extension services and more.  They also have advice and tips, a glossary, and links to other virtual libraries related to landscaping, agriculture, plant biology and travel and tourism.

  Better Homes & Gardens the website of  the magazine with ideas and improvement projects for your home and garden. HGTV's gardening section has an extensive amount of information on lawn care and landscaping, flowers, vegetables, pests and diseases, soil and water, and lots more.  They even have a section on cacti and succulents, and on wildlife.  Elsewhere on their site, you'll find plenty of recipes for the fruits and veggies from your garden and there are also garden crafts, flower arranging, and decorating tips.
  Carolina Gardener online magazine has a wealth of information about gardening in the Southeast, along with gardening workshops and symposiums, and garden tours. National Gardening is a comprehensive (and very pretty) site covering flower, herb, vegetable and fruit gardening, lawn care and landscaping, and even sections on houseplants, cooking, and garden crafts.  Their kids' gardening site has tips and projects for teachers and parents to help kids plant butterfly gardens, make pressed flowers, and more.
  GardenGuides features flower, vegetable and herb guides that cover all the basics, including how and where to sow, how to combat pests, and even recipes.  Their article index covers many more topics, from planning and design, to roses, to garden tours. The Old Farmer's Almanac--Gardener's Companion is the place to go for fast answers to basic questions.  There are planting tables, zone and frost charts, weather data, monthly tips and garden chore reminders, as well as lots of good links to gardening websites and a helpful "Reference Room".
  Gardening Places is a directory of gardening websites, including seeds, catalogs, greenhouses, tools, nurseries, flowers, vegetables, and organic supplies.  
   

Local Gardening

  Brookgreen Gardens, in Pawley's Island, SC, is America's oldest and largest sculpture garden.  It features 300 beautifully landscaped acres punctuated with ponds and water fountains, enormous stone and bronze sculptures, and hundreds of smaller sculptures.  Their "What's Blooming" page tells you what flowers you can expect to enjoy during your visit.  There is also an adjoining wildlife preserve with 50 acres of hiking trails featuring aviaries, an alligator swamp, otter pond, deer savannah, and even a riverboat ride.  The North Carolina Arboretum is a 434-acre public garden located within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest of the Pisgah National Forest in Asheville, North Carolina.  Surrounded by the dense folds of the botanically diverse Southern Appalachian Mountains, the Arboretum is nestled in one of the most beautiful natural garden settings in America.  A center for education, research, conservation and economic development, and garden demonstration, the Arboretum offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages. 
  Clemson University's Spartanburg Extension Office website has a wealth of information about local and regional plants.  They also provide services including soil and plant testing, and have many online publications covering pests and diseases, food storage and handling, even information on forestry, livestock, and irrigation. The Sculpture Garden of Mayo Mac Boggs, an internationally known sculptor, painter, and digital artist residing in Spartanburg.  His website allows you to take an online tour of his gallery and sculpture garden.
  The Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a 10 acre public garden located off of Reidville Road in Spartanburg, featuring butterfly and water gardens, an observation deck and gazebo, and offering nature tours and scout programs. The South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson University is nearly 300 acres, features a butterfly garden, nature-based sculptures, an heirloom vegetable garden, and more.  There are classes and programs for children, adults and families throughout the year, a geology museum, learning center, and a coffee and gift house.
  INFORM Spartanburg's list of more than 25 gardening clubs in upstate South Carolina. The South Carolina Master Gardener Program is offered by Clemson University, and is a way to learn more about gardening and to give back to the community.
   

Organic Gardening

 

All Organic Links is the best place to go to see the full breadth of information available on growing and living organically.  They have over 240 links to organic gardening sites all over the world, with thousands more for organic restaurants, clothing, publications, and products, representing something for everyone.

Organic Gardening Magazine's website has lots of helpful advice on organic weed and pest control, composting, fertilizing, and much more. Their "Marketplace" page has links to dozens of organic-friendly garden supplies from beneficial insects to irrigation, and their archives let you find all their best past articles.

 

Avant-Gardening: Creative Organic Gardening has a wealth of information about planning and organizing a garden, composting and building good soil, biodiversity and other related issues.  Also has a helpful list of other recommended sites for gardeners.

Organic Kitchen's Gardening Resources has dozens of links to informative articles and websites about organic gardening, composting, fertilizer and soil building, and seeds.  There are also sections devoted to organic food and cooking, restaurants, farms, markets, and vineyards.

 

Extremely Green is a commercial site that offers an enormous number of organic gardening supplies including lawn care and weed control, pest control, tools and fertilizers, and the site also has numerous helpful guides that offer advice on the best broadcasting techniques, mosquito control, rose care, and other topics.

Seeds of Change offers advice on composting, growing seedlings indoors, saving seeds, a helpful glossary, an online newsletter, recipes, and plenty of seeds, tools and garden accessories.

 

Pest Control

  Clemson University's Extension "Home and Garden Information Center" includes an "Insects, Diseases, and Other Problems" section that focuses on plants common in the Upstate.  Aside from insects and diseases, they also cover weeds, household and structural pests and pesticide safety.  The National Gardening "Pest Control Library" has clear, full color photos to help you determine what insect, disease, or critter is destroying your plants, and how to best take care of the problem.
  DoItYourself.com--Outdoor Pest Control: although there are a number of annoying ads and pop-ups on this site, there is nonetheless a lot of great, free advice on how to insect pests that attack plants, lawns, people, and pets.  Also discusses trouble with fungi and plant diseases.  
 

Seeds & Stores

 

Appalachian Seeds, based in Flat Rock, NC specializes in heirloom tomatoes.  They carry dozens of heirloom varieties, all organically grown.

Garden Bazaar is a directory of over 75 gardening categories, from African Violets and Bonsai, to greenhouses and stonework.
  The Backyard Gardener's directory of online gardening catalogs, featuring seeds, bulbs, water gardening, herbs, cacti, nurseries, hydroponics, gazebos and greenhouses, supplies and accessories, and more. Seeds of Change carries a huge variety of organically produced fruit, vegetable, flower, and ornamental seeds and seedlings.  They also sell accessories and tools from soil testing kits to greenhouses.
  Burpee is perhaps the best known seed company in the country.  They have an extensive online catalog of vegetables, flowers and herbs, and even garden accessories. The Southern Exposure Seed Exchange offers a wide array of organically produced vegetable, herb, and flower seeds, including hundreds of heirloom varieties. 
 
Other Resources  
 

The library carries hundreds of gardening and landscaping books, and several gardening magazines available to be checked out.
In the headquarters branch the gardening books are on the top floor, and the magazines are on the main floor.
