This is an overview of our new art books—it is not a complete list of all our new art-related materials, just a sampling. These items will be found on the main level of the Headquarters Library. |

The Art of John Berkey. Frank, Jane. 759.13 FRANK Berkey is mainly known for his fantastic science fiction paintings depicting surreal spaceships, and while there are plenty of those included here, this book also covers the full breadth of his art, from landscapes and genre paintings, to his more allegorical and realistic works. |
The Art of the Picts: Sculpture and Metalwork in Early Medieval Scotland. Henderson, George. 709.411 HENDERSON Once only studied seriously by archeologists, the picts (ornate geometrical, or sometimes hiroglyphical, carvings covering everything from tombstones to jewelry) are approached here by art historians. The beautiful and mysterious art of the medieval Brits tells an interesting story about their advanced society, and their movement from paganism into Christianity.
| The Complete Book of Papermaking. Asunción, Josep. 676.22 ASUNCION In addition to the expected step-by-step section with suggested projects and plenty of color photographs illustrating the full process of making your own paper, there are also sections on the history of paper, its properties (such as strength, coatings, and watermarks), a full chapter on materials and tools, technical aspects, and fibers. This is a practical and very beautiful book. | Dieter Roth: Unique Pieces. Roth, Dieter. 709.2 ROTH Roth was a painter, printmaker, video artist, and more, and became famous in the 1960's and 70's for his use of food and "refuse" in his art. He made bread and chocolate sculptures, arranged discarded items on a background and covered them in pools of glue or chocolate, and incorporated the decomposition of the food into the integrity of the piece. This retrospective covers a wide range of his work, with clear, colorful, and detailed reproductions. | |||
| George Inness and the Visionary Landscape. Bell, Adrienne Baxter. 759.13 BELL Inness was first influenced by the Hudson River School's romantic landscapes, then traveled to France and turned towards a more Barbizon approach. This book serves to highlight his hazy 19th century American landscapes of farmlands and pastures, occasionally dotted with cattle and people, as well as providing a good deal of information on Inness, his artistic processes, and his life. |
Hockney's People. Livingstone, Marco. 759.2 LIVINGSTONE Hockney is perhaps best known for his minimalist, California-colored, swimming pool scenes, but he has consistently created portraits since his youth. This huge collection covers nearly every portrait from every phase of his career, from early self-portraits to the well-known images of his friends, lovers, and family. Included are drawings, paintings and prints, as well as his revolutionary photo collages. |

Miami Houses.
Asensio Cerver, Francisco.
728.09759 MIAMI This book is deceiving in its compact size, as it is packed with gorgeous, albeit small, color photos of the unique Miami style. Classic and contemporary Art Deco architecture and minimalist interior design combine with the unassuming palette and flavor of the Caribbean to produce the comfortable elegance that Miami is famous for. |
Niki de Saint Phalle. Saint-Phalle, Niki de. 730.92 SAINT-PHALLE Saint Phalle was a painter, sculptor, performance artist, actress and model best known for her expressive, voluptuous, hyper-colored "Nanas." This beautiful overview of her paintings, sculptures, and huge, mosaic fountains and installations also includes an intimate perspective about the woman behind the work, such as excerpts from her diaries, whimsical drawings, and plenty of photos of her at work.

A few helpful tips for finding these items |
||||
|
Locating a book:
In the Headquarters Library, most new books are on the
main level in the New Book area. Most other art books, including
biographies, are on the upper level in Non-Fiction. All videos and
DVDs are in the AV area on the main level. All branch libraries have
some art books, but the largest selection is at Headquarters. The main
library also carries several
art magazines, located
on the main level, in the back. If you come in and have trouble
finding a book, or any other item, ask a staff member for help—that’s what
we’re here for! Don’t have a library card? Here’s how to get one. |
Putting a book on hold:
If the book or video you want has already been
checked out, you can put it on hold. We’ll put it aside for you when
it’s returned, and then give you a call. You can put it on hold
yourself through
the library’s online
catalog, or you can
call or come by and we
can do it for you. Getting & returning books: Don’t want to come downtown? Contact the library branch of your choice and have them send the item you’d like to any of our other locations: Boiling Springs, Chesnee, Cowpens, Inman, Landrum, Middle Tyger, Pacolet, Westside, or Woodruff. You can pick it up (and return it) at any Spartanburg County Public Library! |
