New Arrivals

This is an overview of our new art books—it is not a complete list of all our new art-related materials, just a sampling.  These items will be found on the main level of the Headquarters Library.

After Whistler:  The Artist and His Influence on American Painting.  Merrill, Linda.  759.13 AFTER
Merrill devotes the first half of her book to examples of Whistler's major works, then examines the generation of American artists influenced by him.  Includes famous and not-so-famous paintings from Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Frederick Remington, Henry O. Tanner and dozens more.
Allan Houser:  An American Master (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994).  Rushing, W. Jackson.
730.92 RUSHING    This prolific and versatile artist is well represented with this large, colorful coffee table book.  Houser was educated primarily in Indian schools studying traditional Apache art, and although its themes and symbols remained constant, his work eventually began to reflect his other aesthetic influences: modern Western art, and African sculpture.  Fans of Moore, Brancusi, Hepworth, etc. will love Houser's smooth, stylized bronzes and abstract marble pieces.  Native American art lovers will appreciate his colorful narrative paintings and his affectionate portrayal of the Apache and their culture.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner:  The Dresden and Berlin Years.  Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig.  791.943 Kirchner.  Published in conjunction with an enormous exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, this substantial book covers Kirchner's work from about 1905 to 1919.   Best known for his vibrant expressionist paintings and his innovative woodcuts, Kirchner was a founding member of the Bruckë, whose members collectively ushered in the Expressionist movement.  This is easily the largest collection of his works in over 30 years, including sculptures, lithographs, etchings, sketches, pastels, pen and ink drawings, as well as hundreds of paintings and woodcuts. Native Universe:  Voices of Indian America.  McMaster, Gerald and Clifford E. Trafzer, editors.  973.0497 NATIVE  This beautiful celebration of Native American culture from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian combines scholarly essays, legends as told by prominent storytellers, and historical photographs with breathtaking art.  Carvings, baskets, masks, paintings, beadwork, clothing, weaving, jewelry, prints, musical instruments, pottery, feather work, and more are examined with wonderful detail and clarity.  Works from the ancient Incas to digital artists of the present day, and from the Inuit tribes to the Peruvians is included.
Painting in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena.  Norman, Diana.  759.5 Norman.  This heavily illustrated text covers the major movements and artists of the Tuscan city of Siena from about 1260 to 1555, with nearly as much city history as art history.  There is an emphasis on Siena's many cathedrals, although private and secular works are touched upon as well.  Artists included are Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta, Beccafumi, and dozens more. Worlds of Tomorrow: The Amazing Universe of Science-Fiction Art.  Ackerman, Forrest A.  741.64 ACKERMAN.  Mutants, monsters, heroes, and killer robots abound in this beautifully designed and illustrated book, which focuses on comic book and trade paperback cover art of the mid-century American atomic age.

Unless otherwise noted, these books are located on the upper level at the Headquarters library, in the main art section.  Biographies will be on the upper level in a separate area.  Please ask if you have any trouble locating any item.

The Art of Fabric Collage:  An Easy Introduction to Creative Sewing.  Eichorn, Rosemary.  746.46 EICHORN  This contemporary, colorful, playful work will make you think of fabric in a whole new way.  Eichorn takes the reader step by step through planning, designing, lining, embellishing, and finishing, and although most of her projects are for clothing, the techniques can easily be applied to wall hangings, and other decorative art projects.  Best of all, her approach is friendly and she stresses that even those with no sewing experience at all can create wonderful fabric collages. The Art Quilt.  Shaw, Robert.  746.46 SHAW
There are several interesting essays on the history of quilts and art quilts, and informative discussions of technique and methods here, but the real meat of this book is it's glorious photos of hundreds of amazing quilts and wall hangings.  In this huge, oversized volume you will be introduced to the work of artists Therese May, Nancy Crow, Pamela Studstill, Yvonne Porcella, Susan Shie and James Acord, Judith Larzelere, Michael James, and dozens of other masters whose work reshapes our traditional thinking of what a quilt can be.
Contemporary Embroidery : Exciting and Innovative Textile Art Morrell, Anne.  746.44 MORRELL  Here Morrell presents the work of 38 artists from Britain, North America, Europe, and Australia. At first glance, the reader is struck by the diversity of approaches possible in a medium where any type of cloth can be manipulated and stitched on by anything that can penetrate it. Techniques represented include hand and machine stitching, canvas embroidery, quilting, appliqué, dyeing, assemblage, and fabric painting. Patchwork Quilting and Appliqué:  The Complete Guide to All the Essential Techniques Dobson, Jenni.  746.46 DOBSON  This book from Reader's Digest is a great basic resource for beginners.  Not only are the parts of the quilt itself explained clearly, but the equipment and supplies are addressed as well.  There are also a wide variety of techniques and designs shown and 25 projects for quilts and wall hangings to choose from.
Quilting Masterclass : Inspirations and Techniques from the Experts.  Guerrier, Katharine.  746.46 GUERRIER  A beautiful and inspiring collection of contemporary designs by award-winning artist from across the globe.  Each work is shown with details and unusual techniques are explained with helpful charts and quotes from the artists.  Graciously included are brief artists' biographies in the back which point the reader to other books and websites in which to find more work by each artist. Spirits of the Cloth:  Contemporary African American Quilts.  Mazloomi, Carolyn.  746.4608996 MAZLOOMI  More than 60 world-class artists' works are showcased in this vibrant collection from curator and artist Carolyn Mazloomi.  The quilts are organized by theme, such as "Visons of Africa," "Sacred Space," "Social and Political Protest," and "Praise Songs."  The large, clear photographs and the artists' words about their creative inspiration make for a moving and engaging experience.  Preface by Faith Ringgold.
The Techniques of Japanese Embroidery.  Tamura, Shuiji.  746.44 TAMURA  This lush book from the Japanese Embroidery Center in Atlanta features amazing examples of traditional and contemporary Japanese embroidery, complete with diagrams and patterns.  Several types of stitching and effects are covered, such as couching, padding, knots, and braiding.  There is also a brief history of Japanese embroidery with examples of various motifs and their meanings.

Traditional Indian Textiles.  Gillow, John and Nicholas Barnard.  746.0954 GILLOW  The creation and decoration of cloth is the focus of this beautifully illustrated book.  Several weaving and dying techniques are examined, as well as ornamentation such as block printing, embroidery, beadwork, appliqué, and mirrorwork.  The emphasis is on clothing, but there are also many great tapestries, rugs, and wall hangings included as well.  (This book is one of a series; you may also enjoy Traditional Indonesian Textiles 746.09598 GILLOW)

A few helpful tips for finding these items

Locating a book:  In the Headquarters Library, most new books are on the main level in the New Book area.  Most other art books, including biographies, are on the upper level in Non-Fiction.  All videos and DVDs are in the AV area on the main level.  All branch libraries have some art books, but the largest selection is at Headquarters.  The main library also carries several art magazines, located on the main level, in the back.  If you come in and have trouble finding a book, or any other item, ask a staff member for help—that’s what we’re here for!

Don’t have a library card?  Here’s how to get one.

Putting a book on hold:  If the book or video you want has already been checked out, you can put it on hold.  We’ll put it aside for you when it’s returned, and then give you a call.  You can put it on hold yourself through the library’s online catalog, or you can call or come by and we can do it for you.

Getting & returning books:  Don’t want to come downtown?  Contact the library branch of your choice and have them send the item you’d like to any of our other locations:  Boiling Springs, Chesnee, Cowpens, Inman, Landrum, Middle Tyger, Pacolet, Westside, or Woodruff.   You can pick it up (and return it) at any Spartanburg County Public Library!
