Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May 1 - May 31, 2021

Join Spartanburg County Public Libraries as we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States through our library collections. The Celebration of Asian/Pacific Heritage began in 1979 with a Presidential Proclamation commemorating a weeklong celebration marking the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 as many of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. In the mid-1990s, the celebration was changed to a month-long observance.

We hope that you celebrate with us by exploring the many rich cultures under the Asian / Pacific Heritage umbrella and discover a new favorite, book, movie, or resource from our collection which we have highlighted below.
